Logistics and Transport in Italy: why do companies need to work together?

Logistics and domestic transport are the hidden engine that keeps manufacturing and retail companies running every day. But rising fuel costs, thin profit margins and fierce competition are putting Italian transport companies under serious pressure. To protect local supply chains and keep service quality high, clients must act responsibly. Working together as one system is the only way to protect the value of “Made in Italy”.

Running a fleet of trucks for road freight requires constant investment. In recent years, several costs have risen at the same time, and this has weakened the financial health of Italian carriers. The biggest cost is fuel. Diesel makes up about 30–35% of the total operating costs of a trucking company. Every change in the oil price affects company budgets.
There are other increases too. Raw materials and spare parts cost more, especially tires and other parts made from petroleum. The renewal of the National Collective Labor Agreement (CCNL) has also raised wages, which is fair and protects workers. If clients do not automatically accept and cover these higher costs, logistics companies risk operational collapse.

The freight market is fragmented. Most companies are small or very small. Client companies often take advantage of this and choose their logistics partner by price alone. This harms the whole supply chain. First, carriers cannot invest in new technology, newer vehicles or staff training. Second, it becomes harder to offer fair, transparent pay and decent working conditions. Third, illegal practices make things worse. They create unfair competition with prices far below the real market level, and they lower the value of the entire logistics sector.

Choosing a distributor only for the lowest price, or hiring foreign operators, is a serious strategic risk for Italian manufacturers. Large international groups follow global priorities. In a crisis, or if their profits fall, they may leave the local market.

This would leave a critical gap in your distribution chain. Italian logistics has always offered strong control over service quality, thanks to its wide local coverage, flexibility and deep knowledge of local infrastructure. Supporting national carriers therefore means protecting the independence of your supply chain. It also gives Italian manufacturers a reliable local partner for the medium and long term.

“Fare sistema” means “working together as one system”. In logistics, it means building a partnership between client companies and transport carriers. It requires three practical steps:

  1. Recognize real cost increases. Adjust transport rates to match real changes in fuel prices and operating costs.
  2. Reward legality and transparency. Choose logistics partners not only by price, but also by how well they follow labor laws, safety rules and quality standards.
  3. Help carriers grow. Give transport companies the means to organize better, go digital, and offer more efficient and integrated services.

Protecting Italian transport companies means protecting the competitiveness of the whole production system.
